i'm refinishing the stock on my mosin, and because of the spots on the wood i had to stain it darker than i woulda liked. it actually came out way better than i had hoped, so thats a plus. i put 3 coats of poly on it, and the more i put on the more i like it......

so, how many coats would you normally apply? and is there a downside to applying to much?

the more i apply the deeper and smoother the stock gets, i just don't want it to go like most of my projects

    good,good,good,great,utter shit. :mamoru:

I put over 30 coats of Minwax wipe on poly on my 10/22 stock. I wanted to be able to wet sand, buff and polish it when I was done though.

More coats wont hurt it at all.

Car polish actually because I had it lying around. I used my orbital buffer on it too. I was going for a piano smooth finish (or at least the best I could do). It ended up looking close.
