The post below is just one example that I can think of but any other posts like this or any others that have valuable information that people may benefit from. And this could be added to the newish sticky that Squid made a while ago...

I know there are probably tons more charts, graphs, pictures, etc... that would be helpful, I just don't know where to find them. :o

It should help clear up some more typical questions noobs like myself and others may have.

I don't know I think the article is kind of irresonsable. While using what you have avaliable such as butter, vagasil, etc might work for a few mags or get a gun that has stopped running to fire.

Some noob is going to put some serious garbage in their gun.

If your going to use some inexpensive lubricant than syntetic motor oil works reasonably well.

If you want to put the good stuff I personally like gunbutter because it does not burn off and carbon does not stick to it. This means less work when you clean your gun.

I also like to run my guns like I like my bitches. WET

First I did not say the article promoted putting garbage in the gun. I said that it is irresponsible to mention that things like sun tan lotion, butter, or vagasil can be used as a lubricant. Some noob is going to read over that think it's a great idea. I would not of mentioned it, or I would put big bold highlighted disclaimer that this is only for emergency's end of the world people are shooting you your going to die last resort because you have nothing else and your rifle stopped working.

While I've never meet him I do know he is some hot shot instructor. I also seem to remember that he does shoot matches from time to time maybe with Zak Smith iirc. Anyway in the article he did say he used to shoot NRA high power.

    So anymore gamer comments?

thats pretty much the point he is making - it's a last resort. he teaches fighting rifle classes.

it's good to use as a guide but i doubt anyone would SOLELY use things like vagasil or lotion on their rifle.

If they do, they deserve what they get. I applaud someone for saying "hey if its lubricated thats all that matters" instead of pimping some wonder lube thats only $39.95 a bottle.

from what i've read, pat will acknowledge that there are certain brands that are better than others, but everyone is different. what works for some wont work for others. thats his whole philosophy

His point is to not get hung up or waste time on picking a lube or deciding your rifle will ONLY function if it has Virgincuntgoo 3000 in it.

This is a tendency that commonly requires breaking when you start training to fight, and I will freely admit I had to shake it too. You use the best that is available when you need it and get on with it.

Any dumbass that reads the article and thinks that using cream cheese, lotion, snot, whatever as a long-term lubricant not only deserves what they get, but their reading comprehension sucks since the author qualified them as only being better than nothing in a pinch in the next paragraph.

I disagree. I work in the gun industry. You absolutely have to watch what you say, what you imply, what can be misinterpreted. Not going to say what I really feel because you guys all sack ride all these instructor types.

what does anyone really have to go on in terms of what to buy or do with their gun? the suggestion of others. the most important thing is the reliability of the source and i would consider pat rogers one of the best in that department.

now, just so we're clear about what he's recommending vs. what can be done in a pinch, let me quote directly from the article:

To me, that sounds like he's not recommending those types of products for anything more than emergency.

If I were to go on what pat rogers recommends, it would be the bolded product in the paragraph above.

Now, after all of that, how can you say he needs to "watch what he says" unless you have approximately zero ounces of reading comprehension?

edit: and not that you might think it will make a difference, i'm not sack riding him, i'm pointing out my interpretation of what he does and does not say based on the text at hand.

  21. Any one with a lick of common sense will understand that Pat was only pointing out that many things will work as a lubricant, and that some lubricant is better than no lubricant. I understand that people can read all sorts of things into what's said (hey, Pat Rogers told me to lubricate my gun with vagisil) but if Pat were to stuff his articles with disclaimers and warnings, then the people with common sense probably wouldn't read it. You can't expect to have to write for the lowest common denominator.
