i got a call tues. about a job i had an interview for nearly a month ago
i guess they hired someone else, but now need a second person in there
    network/customer support

they offered 35k and i told them i really can't do less than 40
got a call back the next day and they offered 38
yay., i took it :) and i'm supposed to start on 8:30am MONDAY :)
i could have started thurs/fri, but i told them i had a few things to finish up so monday would be better

i went in on thursday for an hour+ to meet the guys and see where everything is and we all had lunch (chinese delivery, whee)

on friday, i get a call from a hospital who wants me in for an interview 9am TUESDAY for a job closer to what i want to do, and for quote "....between 55 and 82k" :eek3:
of course i said yes i'm still available and that 9am tues would be just fine for an interview

NO LESS than 3 minutes later i get *another* call from another place (with a .gov on their email btw) and they want me in at 8am on TUESDAY, again for a job a bit closer to what i'm looking for
so of course i said yes (and if it goes a tad long i can always call the 9am and tell them i'm running late - only 10 min between them)

the soonest i could get an email off to the 1st place was about 4:30pm friday, saying this:

    i haven't heard back

of course, there's no guarentee that i'll get either of those two, and taking a day off the day after i start, well, it's not exactly fair
i know i'd hate it and i'd close the door on that guy
which would leave me with NO job,
assuming i don't get offered either of those other two :noes:

do i even bother to show up at the 1st place, with them seeing that email and knowing i wasn't able to start friday because i said i had a few things to finish up? (and i did/do, really)

if i don't, do i call them around 10am and ask if they got that email i sent friday and see if i can make the actual start next monday?

if i don't, do i even answer the phone when they call?

if i do go, do i tell 'em i can't stay long (on monday), maybe a few hours, due to having to finish a few things elsewhere and ask them if i can start next monday? kinda faking it there, but it should fly

do i ignore the two interviews on tuesday and just plow forward in this job? (call and cancel them of course)

    When it rains, it pours.

I'm not sure what you should do honestly.

You can always call the company you said you'd be there on Monday and explain you need another week to get things in order.

Then interview with these other companies.

If you're not going to tell them you need another week then you should show up.
Fuck email...you call them NO MATTER WHAT and tell them you can't start for another week, or show up on monday.
This is a stupid, 5th grade mentality question....YOU call THEM.
Do I need to say it again? Call and say "I'm sorry, I can not start today. I will have to start next monday."

Of course they'll know it's because you're about to bail, but at least they won't know 100% for sure.
if the other two are more what you want to do go interview.

My dad always says "The company has no memory." If they didn't need you 3 days after hiring you, they'd fire you. Do the right thing and call and say "I'm sorry I can't start this week." Do not lie to them, but don't feel bad about putting them off...they'd have no problem doing it to you.

so don't go, but do call and say i need a week

well, they don't know that at all - as i had mentioned to them i have a few things to finish
    and yeah, they are

    good enough

get up at 8, call, say i can't make it this week and have to put it off to next monday "since the project i was working on couldn't be finished when it was scheduled"

on tuesday call work and say there is a family emergency

interview with the companies...if you get an offer quit from firm #1 saying that the job isn't what you expected or you don't fit the company is the right fit for you

i already sent an email, and they already know there's a project i'm working on that is running behind

calling and changing the story to a fambly emergency would be stupid

so you turned down a guaranteed job for a job you're not qualified for but "really want"?

    good luck.

i know, stupid, shooting myself in the foot, etc etc :uh:

but the $ they would be paying me would mean i'm still looking for a better anyway and be gone in a month
this way, at least i'll still have an "in" if they need more help later
