WEB Statistically speaking, are those "landing strip" web formats successful at selling??

Every "infomercial" type page I see is always like 400 px wide by like 1,000,000 px tall. These range from "Make $10k a day trading Forex with our super secret method" to "fuck 10 gorgeous women a night with our super secret method" to "learn the secrets to make $1,000 per hour selling crap on websites". The format is all exactly the same.

Part of me thinks "omg, wouldn't smart people just automatically close their browsers when they see a hokey layout like that?"

But then I think "wait, most people aren't smart."

And then I think "it must work or people wouldn't do it."

So is that like a proven successful website strategy?

Is there a term for it other than "landing strip?" I think I read that somewhere but I can't rememeber where.

They are called "squeeze pages" ;)

And they do work...but yes, very cheesy. Close to being the equivalent to late night informercials...they push enough content at you to make you think it might be worth trying out.

I might be able to get you a really goo deal off of this one: http://tuberake.com/

Pssh. That one was maybe long enough to land a Cessna on.

This one you could land a 747 on: http://www.realworldseduction.com/18927.htm

It's even got yellow boxes to warn you that you're near the end of the runway

Sadly enough they do work, and people ask me to make them all the time. If I try to ask if they want something with a little more eye candy they usually refuse...

the fact that they work makes me lose faith in people's intelligence.

And it also annoys me because I feel like if I ever had a product that I wanted to sell, I would be more successful with some shitty ass full page landing strip ad than if I were to actually make a nice site that wasn't insulting to people's intelligence.

Actually, I pretty much have that opinion of marketing in general. It's not about having a good product. It's about having a great advertising team to sell to idiots who aren't smart enough to objectively compare products themselves so they buy from whoever tells them to.

In general most people are in fact idiots and like to have things spoon-fed to them.

Is it morally wrong to exploit that?

For example, instead of doing your best and making a product on which you are proud to put your name, you make a shit product but sell a billion of them to idiots.

Bingo. Great example of this is Acai Berry. They make a TON of money selling their shit diet program, if you even take the 5 seconds to google "Acai Berry" the first entire page and even sponsored ads are full of websites of how acai berry is a scam and harmful to you. :hs:

    Capitalism 101.

    Marketing 101.

If you're questioning it, then online marketing is DEFINITELY not the right field for you. :hs:

i am kind of at mix feelings on this...on one hand, there will always be idiots and there will always be people getting rich off of them. Being an entrepreneur also means seizing an opportunity when it comes along and since if you dont do it, someone else will..so might as well be you.

On the other hand, i would ask myself why i wouldnt make a quality product in the first place, get that to sell well, leave a good name for myself in case whatever other opportunity comes along...so basically this mentality is for the long haul while i feel the first one is for the short-run get rich quick and retire (which is tempting, but how would a person know their shit product is gonna sell millions in the first place anyway)
