So I just bought an 88 Sportster,

Straight pipes, drag bars (no speedo)

Whats checked on a state inspection typically?

(its in MA, but even a general idea would be nice)

Biggest thing is safety items. Brakes, lights and tires are the biggest things. I'm not sure about the speedo.

As far as the sound goes I don't know. I always had a stock pipe on my bike so this was never an issue. I'm gueesing here but the inspection is called a "Safety Inspection" for a reason. I don't think that they care about the sound. Just look at all of the Harleys out there with straight pipes, or even sport bikes with after-market pipes that set of car alarms every time they pass by.

Do the inspection. If it fails for any reason you can come back within a month or so and get the inspection re-done free of charge.
