I took off the barrel band and didnt like the step-down so rather than just cutting it off I smoothed out the forearm and sanded the stock down to refinish it.

I'd like to darken it up a little so it doesnt look yellowed but not so much that I cant make out the dark and light sections.

    Any suggestions on a stain?

i bought some grips for a .44 that had this finish called badgerwood i think? the pic doesn't do it justice, but it does an awesome job of showing off the grain

Any particular color you're looking for? Walnut is pretty traditional, you could go for something lighter like "maple," or else get some rubbing oil to do a traditional oil-rubbed finish like on Holland & Holland guns. :dunno:

Sand out the barrel channel for a .920 while you have it that far down.

I'm going to put a couple more coats of stain on it then finish it with gloss poly.

Yea its the factory stock. I reshaped the forearm and stripped the old finish off with a sanding disc on a drill motor. I finish sanded it by hand

Sure no problem. I wish I had taken pics of the process. If someone has a factory stock collecting dust they want to get rid of I can do another one and take pics from the beginning.

how well does the barrel hold in w/o the barrel band on it?

is there anything to put on it to get it down to the bare wood (take off the finish thats on it from factory) or do you HAVE to sand it to get it that way?

I did mine with a green stain. It ended up light and dark green with some gold accents. No pics right now.

can you do the edu with a finish stripper instead of a sanding wheel to take the finish off of it?
