If you are worried about future availability, then buy the guns now. I doubt President Obama will try and pass a dog ban anytime soon.

Unless it's a vicious assault dog, then you are fucked x2.

why the hell do you need 2 ARs?

I bought my GSD with papers from a local breeder for almost nothing. If you look around you can get a good deal on them. There is no need to buy a 1K+ GSD unless you want a competitive bloodline.

Get both and you'll be very happy with the decision.

heller prohibits the banning of common guns, the ar is the definition of common, it leads gun sales.

plus you'd have to ignore that gun control just isn't supported now, they can't even get together enough support for an awb in il, what makes you think there's nationwide support?

I was going to buy a couple SAIGA's and an AR upper, but I decided to get an Akita instead :o Mine will hopfully be ready in December too.

If Obama wins I suppose I may rack up my cc bill a bit and go ahead and get the Saiga's.

The court set no standard as to what is "common" and what is not, or how it's defined or applied. Saying they can't be banned citing Heller is not correct. I agree with you that an AR would fall under that clause, but it doesn't mean it couldn't be banned anyway and have to be challenged in court since there is no standard set by the court.

No doubt there will be lots of building on heller over time in the courts and challenges to it but the language of heller is I believe fairly clear on where the cards will fall. Is that really a reason to throw a dozen receivers in the closet? Does the political climate support it? Is it enforceable? I don't see either of those as being yes, I'm open to evidence to the contrary though.

"in common use at the time" Now really do your worst to say how that couldn't apply to an ar. In public hands? The sales data shows the story there. In police and government hands? Also the definition of popular. I just don't see any weasely way to twist out of it. What do you see as being the argument against the ar15 applying to that?

By all means be prepared, I won't be buying you a gun after a ban. It doesn't seem like a very knowledgeable position to take to believe that a ban is imminent or that a ban on ar's could apply. I wouldn't go into debt for one or stock a bunch of receivers that you'll never use away.

I'm not disagreeing with you that the AR wouldn't qualify as a "common" firearm, I believe that it does, I'm just saying the courts opinion doesn't define what makes a particular weapon "common" or not. There could be a ban, and it would need to be challanged in court.

I'm not sure I would want sales figures to be used to apply the standard, that could leave a lot of more expensive guns, or rare calibers, in a legal gray area. I don't really like the phrase "at the time" either. If the AR rifle is replaced with a new model, and that new model becomes popular, would it open up the old rifles to a possible ban? It guess it's possible. I'm not sure what standard I would apply, just saying a ban could still be possible and we'd have to fight it out later.

Plus they could still ban magazines, collapsible stocks, pistol grips, or any Clinton ban feature.
