The game features not only alien creation, but ship creation as well. Since the game is designed by Cryptic (City of Heroes), you know the creation system is going to be epic.

Wow it seems like they're going all-out with content in this game, I can't wait. It's kind of weird how every player will start out as a captain though. Since you can explore planets, ships, and space they should have players start out stuck on a planet in which they have to work their way up a bit to captain their own ship. I hope they're gonna have actual challenges in the game unlike most MMO's these days.

If this turns out to be some care bear crap, which is very possible considering it's being developed by Cryptic, then I'm going back to EVE Online. EVE is one of the few MMO's that actually felt rewarding to me, until some asshole killed me and made me lose my ship. :o

There are certain zones that are permanently pvp enabled, but in other areas pvp is strictly voluntary.

Nice that's like EVE. In EVE zones have different security levels. Solar systems with the highest security level of 1.0 have Concord (cops) flying around that will shoot down any player that destroys another players ship. While in 0.0 security zones there are no Concord ships so anything goes including all-out war. Then there are all the zones where the security level is in between. That'd be awesome if they do it similarly in this game.

This is made by Cryptic so this game shouldn't last very long. On the other hand, Star Wars: The Old Republic is made by motherfucking BIOWARE so I expect that game to be second to WoW in terms of playerbase.

That's the main thing I'm worried about. City of Heroes got dull after a month and Champions Online just flat out sucked. I'm still giving this a chance because it's not another superhero MMO but Cryptic better step it up on this one. I don't care much about playerbase, if I like the game and it has enough players to be enjoyable then that's all I need. WoW may have the largest playerbase but it's far from the best MMORPG.

Well considering there are randomly generated parts of STO, I think the content will be more than Cryptic's other games.

Also STO comes out soon, which is the point of this topic. If Star Wars was coming out in less than a month, we'd be talking about that instead.

That said, potential quality aside, I'm way more interested in the Star Trek universe than the Star Wars one.

As long as they keep on adding content regularly and keep space battles exciting, I'm game.

What do you mean? Are you talking about 2d vs 3d? The shields are on a 2d plane, but space is a full 3d. Unless I'm misunderstanding your comment.

You can't orient yourself on your own axis... hard to explain.

You have to spiral in downward angled circles to get something directly below you

The MMORPG.COM 3 part review has a ton of info on the game.

    It's in there somewhere.

Hmm. I'll have to go read up on their preview. That's lame if that's the case.

The combat looks fun, but yeah... that's really lame.

What's the point of it being in space if you can't even maneuver like it.

Things I learned from the MMORPG preview:

    1. Thanks to technology, you don't have to return to the questgiver to hand in a quest. You just call them from your ship whereever you are.
    2. You can pause the instances. Yes, you read that right. It's on a timer though so it can't be paused indefinitely.
    3. Apparently you can 'level' via pvp as well as pve. In fact, according to MMORPG, in beta you level faster via pvp.
    4. On-board replicators allow you to sell things without going to a starbase.
    5. The issue s34s0ns mentioned- there is a maximum pitch. Space apparently isn't fully 3d as though you can move up and down, you cannot look straight 'up' or 'down'. So although it is 3d, it appears to still be on a 2d plane. The pitch issue is to keep people from going upside down, which is mostly an issue of cannon as nearly all instances of space scenes in the TV series' had the ships on the same plane. :dunno:
    6. The game appears to be entirely 'solo' friendly.
    7. The pvp seems to be very much like WoW's Battlegrounds even down to the part where you can queue from anywhere.

All in all I can say I'm looking forward to it. I've been a Star Trek fan ever since I found out what Star Trek was. It sounds like Cryptic has done a decent job bringing Star Trek into the MMO world and I'm sure they'll continue to improving it in the near future. Ultimately I'm just thrilled to be able to explore the non-JJ Abrams Star Trek universe once more and see what has become of it and even potentially what will become of it.

I wish the space flight was like eve though.

and heavily instanced isn't great for a P2P game... seems closer to just multiplayer. However, I might still try it out.
