My quads are connected to my knee caps in the wrong place. Sometimes when I run for awhile they start to hurt and if I ever try to do a squat with anywhere close to full ROM it kills my knees even if I only have 150 or so pounds on the bar. Leg extensions don't hurt my knees but I'd rather do workouts with free weights. Anyone ever have this problem? Could you do anything to help it? Are there other exercises for free weights I could try out or should I just do squats but not go all the way down? I can go down until my thighs are at about a 15-20 degree angle without it hurting my knees.

My doctor told me a long time ago that whatever I can do to strengthen my legs would help the problem but didn't give me any specific exercises.

Squats are rough on the knees... No way around it.

Maybe consider getting on a joint supplement and sticking with light-weight squats and lunges... Just don't go ATG or anything.

Try front squats. You won't be able to do as much weight, and the movement supposedly recruits more of your VMO which could help to stabilize your knee.

If my knee is hurting usually leg extensions are OK but curls kill.

Have you tried pointing your toes outward a bit? My knees got sore when I started squats, so I changed it up a bit and I've not been sore since.

squats are NOT rough on the knees. I hate that fucking misconception more than anything. The only reason squats are hard on the knees is if you don't know your body and you're squatting with the wrong form.

I have a strange knees that don't go straight up and down when locked. My knees hurt like a bitch when squatting. I went and saw a physical therapist, he corrected my squat form, and now I'm going heavier then ever, with more reps, and no pain.

My only knee pain I've had when working out is after leg extensions, and I've long since stopped those.

I do leg press right after Squats :dunno:

Used to do leg extensions then leg-press, but that was A: When I was still gay and didn't squat and B: When my knees got sore all the time and I didn't know why.

Maybe I'll try seeing a physical therapist. Surgery was an option for me but it would be months before I could walk without crutches and my knees would never be that strong again, it would just make the pain that comes from sports sometimes go away.

The misconception is that squats ruin your knees, and anyone who squats will have trashed knees for the rest of your life. However, if something is already wrong with your knees there isn't much you can do to keep squats from hurting.
For example if your patella doesn't track properly or you have arthritis, its gonna hurt.

If it hurts, stop. Figure out why it hurts and if it is a form problem, fix it and be on your merry way squatting again.

I have to point my toes way outward (like 35 or 40 degrees)...

I thought it might be an imbalance and not really the bone structure, so a couple weeks ago I tried squatting with my toes pointing forward... I went ATG front squat and really fucked my knees up. They're still not 100% so I haven't been able to do legs since :wtc:

Moral of the story: not everybody is structured the same way, so don't go for ideal form because chances are there is SOME way you can squat properly, you're just not performing the movement properly (which is a really easy mistake to make)

I've read stuff that said ATG was better for the knees than stopping at parallel.... and honestly since I started full squatting all my knee pain from squats has gone except recently when I acted dumb ( and for a few months I was retarded and did 1-3RM's every week and divebombing, still no knee pain from that). but it wasn't squatting that did it, it was improper squatting.

So there are no physical conditions which would cause a person's knees to hurt while squatting with proper form?

ceaze, you know what I meant. There is no need to be a prick about it as usual. I said "don't know your body" which could be interpreted by everyone in this thread (except you) that it meant a physical condition.

My point was that people who have knee troubles are typically not going to like squats. If you have knee pain, then good luck squating heavy weight and not having it hurt.

I used to squat in the 500's with no trouble. Then I hurt my knee in sports and while my knee is perfectly fine doing EVERYTHING else (for the most part) even squating 225 will aggrivate it after a few sets.
And yes, my form is quite fine.
