So, I don't post here often. I do more lurking and learning. I've been consistent in the gym for about a year now and I've seen some good results. I'm one of few who acutally squat, and deadlift in the gym. I've had compliments from some of the older guys who appreciate more than curls.

Since I've started, I've been approached twice by two large fellas critiquing my squat form. One claims an 800lb squat, and the other a 575lb squat. They tell me at the bottom of the squat I need to "Pop my hips." It doesn't seem natural to me, and I'd like some insight.

I think my squat form is fine, but I've never been coached. Should I get a video, or is popping the hips not really necessary? :bigthumb:

Cliffs: Do I need to "pop my hips" at the bottom of the squat movement, or is it a personal preference in form? Rookie needs some advice. Thanks.

Honestly I don't know what "popping the hips" at the bottom of a squat even means. Did they explain?

Trying to get a contraction from the adductors or squeezing your glutes as you begin your "up" movement?

They tried to explain it as, a forward thrust of the hips "as if you were boning."

It looks like the consensus so far is that they're full of it. Anyone else?

you dont want to do that necessarily at the very bottom but you do want to be throwing your hips forward as you come up, contracting the glutes as hard as possible
