well i 've decided to man up and do squats . the first time i did them i didn;t have anyone to show me the proper technique so i thought the smith machine would be good to start off and prevent me from hurting myself. anyhow i did 3 or so sets of squats and the next day i could deffentley feel the burn. so the main question here is what do you guys think about using the smith machine for squats compared to the rack. i dunno i thought about it and thought if i can feel the workout then maybe the smith machine is fine and possible better? ps i tried squatting in the rack and it felt akward as hell.

There is no substitute for true barbell squats.

You're much more likely to injure yourself in the smith machine.

The reason they felt so awkward in the rack is becuase there are a bunch of small stabilizer muscles working like hell to keep you upright and balanced. Those muscles aren't getting the same work in the smith machine, and thus will be underdeveloped and relatively week if you continue squat in the smith machine. Also, the smith machine fucks up the natural range of motion, which can put weird stresses on you joints and muscles at various points of the motion.

    Honestly?
You're more of a pussy if you care what other people think.

Smith squats are better than no squats.

Like timberwolf said, smiths are better than none, but doing the barbell will work your stablizers. I always feel more accomplished when I do the bar and not the smith.

Nothing wrong at all with starting out in the smith machine and moving to "free" form squats. Just remember that the bar resistance is generally 15lbs instead of the 45 for an unloaded olympic bar. Once you feel comfortable with your form and the movement, try leaving the smith machine behind.

the squat movement looks so awkward and stressful to the lower back, just do freeweight and go light...why would you do otherwise?

I started on smith squats. You should definitely get into barbell squats eventually as they are *far* superior and a lot more fun :p but if starting on the smith machine gets you used to the basic movement and gives you confidence to start on the barbell version, go you.

Thing to remember is that the smith machine bar doesn't really weigh crap, plus it's assisting you in your lift so you can't take the weights you use on the smith machine and translate them directly to a barbell squat. Having a 45-lb plate on either side of a smith machine != a 45-pound plate on either side of a barbell, so just take that into consideration when you switch over.
