Squat question

    I find that the limiting factor in doing squats with a bar vs on a machine is that my shoulders begin to hurt when using the bar. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this? Perhaps I'm just being a pussy.

    On the bar it usually gets painful around 225 while on the machine I can do around 600 (machine has pads for the shoulders). Granted I understand there is a conversion factor between the two, but I doubt it is 3 to 1.

    stop being a puss. what kind of squats do you do low vs high bar changing the bar position can help.

    I have a pair of traps, but thanks for the advice on the yoke. Its probably because I don't use the bar very often.

    I hate to admit this. I had shoulder surgery about 4 or 5 years ago. I had zero cartilage left in the back of my shoulder socket. I recovered just fine and as long as I was heavy and had alot of upper back fat and water, I had no problems. Since I've lost 50 pounds, the bar kills my shoulder unless I have on a squat suit. What I did was, I got 2 of those neoprene waist belts, cut them, sewed them together and sewed them into the back of a sweat shirt. It works great and it doesn't hurt my shoulder anymore. I know I'm a pussy and I'm ok with that.

    As far as comparing the machine to a real squat, on that machine, I've done 1200 pounds for 5 reps.
