I have been shopping around for a carry, wanted a 9 so i can afford to practice more often. I have taken a liking to the springfield, but the guy at the shop told me it is too big for a carry. the profile is a little bigger than some but I didnt think it was too bad... Is it really too big? fyi, I dont actually have a ccw yet but i want to get the weapon now so i can start shooting and practising.

I'm going to have to disagree with that guy, subcompacts were made for carry.

It is thick, but with the right holster/belt combo you should be fine. I'm personally going to keep mine at the house and start carrying a J-frame in an ankle rig....as soon as I have the cash to buy both a J frame and an ankle holster:rofl:

that's bullshit. i hate gun store counter gurus. hey buddy: you work retail.

the fact that he pushes buttons on a cash register does not make him an expert. the truth is that with the right rig, you can conceal almost anything. who's got the pic of the guy carrying a Deagle IWB?

your first priority shouldn't be how easy it is to conceal, but how easy it is to hit your target. If you can't do that, you minus whale just hang lead sinkers on your belt.

edit: no offense to anyone who works retail. it's just I hear this kind of shit, and immediately think of this:

M&P Compact FTW better ergonomics and thinner overall.

    The right amount.

Probably has 2 boxes through it, tops. No rust.

Getting gun advise from a gun shop worker is like getting car advise from a car salesman. He can recite numbers, specs, etc and "I've heard..." stories. But he'll always have biased advise.

Your better off talking with actual consumers, users and/or gunsmiths and best of all, trying it out for yourself.

NEVER go to a gun shop without first knowing what you want to buy and then allow the gunshop commando behind the counter to 'steer you" into a gun. Just not wise.

I hate how some will steer you from conventional wisdom so they can sound " so in the know "

especially on things like "size" that's so subjective it's ignorant for him to just give such a blanket statement like that.

I own a XD subcompact 9mm. It is in no way too big to be carried comfortably. one could say it is more "boxy" shaped than most other guns its size but this doesn't hamper its portability at all.

I think the XD subcompact is technically smaller barrel-wise than the m&p. the xd having a 3" barrel and the m&p compact having a 3.5 barrel.

Spent the last 1.5 years of it's life riding in the door of my truck. Believe me, if it was going to rust it would have:mamoru:

honestly, anything he can get his hands on. call the ranges/shops first, see what they've got available for rentals, both in different calibers and different makes/models of guns. and don't shy away with something because it's 'full size'. A lot of guys ccw 5" 1911's and 4" .357's. Hell, you've got that guy above who's apparently set on ccw'ing a Desert Eagle.

'Concealability' comes in (at least) third, behind 'accuracy' and 'reliability'. It doesn't matter how well you hide it if you can't hit with it.
