Last thing that needs to be upgraded on my system are the speakers, I don't have much to spend on them (less than $100, maybe a bit more). Does 5.1 make that much of a difference when gaming? Current speakers are probably about 5 years old so just about anything would be an upgrade, just looking for opinions.

doesn't matter too much. A basic home theater will beat 99% of computer speakers.

    Jolly is right. However:

Home theater speakers not only cost more but normally require more equipment, since computer speakers are self contained.
    Crossover, amp, volume control, etc.

I'm a speaker builder from way back, and I can give you a great recommendation that I promise you would make you proud.

Ribbon, or planer speakers have a very articulate resolution.
Partly because of the fact that a good one goes well into the bass range without the need of a distortion causing crossover.

The Monsoon Planar Media 9 model of ribbon speakers plays extremely loud.
The accuracy is outstanding, and they are crossed over at 200hz.
These were a very serious speaker design.

They are out of production, but you can find a mint set on ebay for less than $100 dollars.

Also the Planar Media 11's are the same setup, only with a larger woofer.
I see these all the time on ebay. There doesn't happen to be any listed today, but
it would be well worth the wait to find a pair.
On ebay of course, the key is to find a seller with as close to 100% feedback as possible.

I have some nasty skin hanging off the roof of my mouth because I ate some hot pizza.

You'd think a toad would shy away from that sort of food.

Ya, for sure. You can get some pretty great sounding headphones for $100.

5.1 speakers = extra stuff that you have to find room for. Go with a good set of stereo speakers with a separate woofer; clear sound from either side of your screen will sound much better than crappy sound from all four corners of the room. Granted, 5.1 might help you tell if another player is sneaking up behind you in a shooter game, but then again, the game you're playing might not even support 5.1.
