It was very aqward. He's been doing it about 3 months and I've been boxing/kickboxing for a year and a half. He got in a ton of shots compared to me but I landed quiet a few hooks and overhand rights using a ton of slips and rolls. One thing that threw me off was him punching to the back of the head whenever I clinched. I didn't throw many kicks but I wish I did. Overall it was a good experience and I look forward to doing it again. He thinks he won since he hit me more but they weren't flush where as every time I connected it was with a clean power shot to the jaw.

He's only been doing it 3 months and you let him punch you in the back of the head? Did you not explain to him that he can't strike there? Should have just tied up his arm and dirty boxed if that's what he wanted. I find newer people throw off my timing because they will attack when I'm not expecting it or strange bursts. I just try to stay calm and find the opening like maybe something they will do before they kick or punch like drop their guard slightly and jab the piss out of them.

Wing Chun is very centerline so hooks will work very effective.

When you strikes make sure to be very snappy because wing chun works a lot off reference points so if you leave a hand exposed they will pak sao and lap sao the shit out of you (i know those terms might not make any sense) but they essentially control the middle line by using your arms against themselves to tie you up.

Wing Chun also has a very open stance, so if you stay within kicking range you should be able to jump in and out of combat. Also circling around would make it very difficult for him to ground himself.

I really like Wing Chun for its chi sao drills, its very important for understanding energy, sensitivity and momentum.

Any chance you would video tape the sparring?

I think next time I'll try a peekaboo stance and focus on hooks and circling. I got too caught up in the sparring and lost focus.

Shoot for a double, if you miss the double...grab a single or yank an ankle pick if all else fails. Then be a dickhead and triangle him from the top :big grin:

One of our purple belts runs a Wing Chun school in Chicago. I thought it was a joke until I saw it in action. I'd probably be beaten to a pulp if I got too close
