I upgraded my hd and installed windows xp home in my computer, then I upgraded to SP2. A few days later my sound stopped working. In the device manager there was a yellow exclamation under the sound drivers next to Microsoft Kernel Audio Mixer. I did a search and found ALOT of other people had the exact same problem, however I haven't found one person who has fixed it. I uninstalled the kernel mixer, rebooted, add new hardware, installed original drivers from HP's website, nothing. I dont ever recall seeing this kernel driver before this problem, I thought I only had Realtek and Legacy crap under my sound drivers. Either way after I uninstalled it, it has never appeared again in my hardware devices, even after I installed my original drivers and did all updates. Like I said, I dont ever recall seeing it, so maybe it wormed it's way into my PC and screwed things up. I'm eagerly awaiting jollyogre's sarcastic witty remarks on how I should know how to fix it :x:

let me guess, you didn't install chipset drivers? reformat and do it properly.

REALLY??? RESEARCH??? You mean the 3 pages of RESEARCH i did here on this board? Or the pages of research I printed out on how to upgrade my PC?? And as a refresher YOU were the teacher for my last install, so I guess if I was a customer I'd tell you, "well why didn't you tell me that the first time, now fix it for free". And then I would throw it at you.

Let me rephrase what I said...

I DONT KNOW WHAT FUCKING CHIPSET DRIVERS ARE. How about you explain what they are and HOW to install them? Otherwise please dont post in my thread. Thank you.

Find you motherboard drivers online and download them put them to a CD.

If you have an actual audio card, not running off the motherboard, download those drivers!

Find all the drivers for all your hardware and install before upgrading to SP2.

If you don't know what I'm saying take your computer to someone who does.

No, I would tell you that you're a tool and to get the fuck out of the store. I build computers.. If a customer fucks their machine up that's not my fault. They should have had me build it in the first place.

why am I responsible for them not installing chipset drivers if I just sold them the parts and they declined my offer to build it for them?

Sorry, but stupidity is no excuse. If you can't do it, then pay someone who can. And if you don't know what a fucking chipset driver is, then go fucking google it. If someone mentions something I'm not familiar with, then I research it -- I don't chew their head off because *I* didn't know -- how is that their fault?

Besides, they're on the fucking CD that came with your motherboard. How could you not see them? You know the cd even auto-plays when you insert it and 90% of the time the chipset drivers are the FIRST thing it lists.

you only come here to vent because you cant tell people to fuck off during the day. you have to suck it up each time you get out of your geek squad beetle and show someone how to explore on teh inter web

seriously who has a hobby the same as their work? it must suck to be you. no life, friends, hobbies. only hope is e-war. good luck on that.

o and i did a system restore to 2 days ago and everything works fine, and that driver mysteriously disappeared just like i figured. thanks for nothing. :ugh:

You should be able to uninstall SP2, then install your chipset drivers, then reinstall SP2. It's not ideal, but it should work anyway.

Chipset drivers are the files that tell Windows how to use the equipment that's soldered onto your motherboard, as opposed to the equipment you plug into the PCI slots. You can download them off the website of the company that made your computer. Failing that, you can call the company and tell them to tell you where to get the chipset drivers, or to mail you a CD that has them.

where (and what mobo) did you buy that wouldn't have included a cd?

and deuse: don't uninstall SP2 to install chipset drivers. that will make it worse. Reformat is best. IF you're lazy install overtop and pray.

I've done it before, it was fine. This isn't an assembly line where 100% efficiency is paramount; this is one guy with one computer. If it takes some time to get his HDD straight, it's okay.

Oh...first undo the System Restore you did.. You won't be able to uninstall SP2 if it's been hacked apart by System Restore. (personal experience.)

Did you butcher your SP2 install? You'll need that for security and stability.

You fixed it completely? SP2 is installed, AND your onboard sound works? If yes, then download any remaining updates and leave it alone. If you can't get SP2 AND your sound to work at the same time, then you need to do what I said before.

yes SP2 is installed and the sound works. Like I said it worked for about a week and then when it didn't, I noticed it had some wack program installed with an error that was never there before. I restored to the day before and it was fine. Maybe something worked its way through free porn into my device manager :dunno:
