If I'm setting up surround sound for my computer through my stereo, does it matter how many channels the sound card has?
And which channel on the sound card would I use to connect the stereo?
And just to make sure, does it make a big difference what quality sound card I get?

BTW if it makes any difference, I'm planning to use a subwoofer for this setup.
    Thanks, I appreciate any answers.

It more or less depends on your receiver. If you want to decode DTS or Dolby I would think you'd need an optical out on the sound card to go into your reciever. The receiver will decode the sound but without the optical cable you'd just be getting 5 channel stereo.
