A&P sorry to sound so dumb, but what does usm mean

    there is a ef-s 18-55mm that has a micro usm motor, but chances are if you got it as the kit lens it doesn't have it. there are even 2 varieties of usm, ring and micro. the ef-s usm features micro usm as does the 50mm f/1.4, while the 70-200 f/4L and most of the other Ls have the ring usm. ring is supposed to be even faster.

    I don't have a lot of experience with it, but the 50mm moves during focus, and the 70-200 doesn't. I know the 85mm f/1.8 has ring usm and it is also internal focus.
