Then you are free to put it in your bag and carry it around and it doesn't hurt the computer at all? Does it slowly drain the battery or is there any drawbacks to this method of shutting down?

Sorry I'm new to mac crew :hs:

it will slowly drain the battery, but it's a very slow drain. it wouldn't hurt it, the hard drive parks it's heads and it has a sudden impact sensor anyways.
it does not hibernate like windows does

Think of it as off, but with quick turn-on.

If you manhandle any laptop and throw it around, there is a possibility for problems if it's in sleep or turned off.

well, it doesn't magically transform into a block of steel when you close the lid. you still have to worry about cracking the screen or potentially busting something else if you drop it/sit on it/punch it etc
all spinning parts turn off. you can hear the hard drive spin down, the dvd drive will stop, and the fans shut off

i gotta stop closing the lid on my macbook, it's a bad habit for me because i open and close it like 100x a day. it's about 10months old and it kinda makes a creek/fart noise when i open the lid
