maybe they are planning to roll out a new home like service in the future and plan people to actually pay for that. I think in reality they realize that their free online is not profitable and they want to get their consumers used to paying. I wouldnt be surprised if by the time ps4 comes out there is no more free online.

Nope, still free to play online. Everything that's free now will continue to be free.

i dont think theyre going to charge for online play, atleast this gen. thats all i care about. right now im too poor to pay for a yearly sub for online. next gen ill most likely have an actual job and maybe be able to afford it.

yes, i realize its only x amount of dollars and its like 3 dollars a month but i need to be as cheap as possible with games. its an expensive hobby.

if they charge for party chat and even tack on some additional benefits, they're not going to get a lot of subuscribers.

You sure about that man? Xbox fanboy's number 1 defense for paying for XBL was netflix and party chat before but now netflix is free on PS3 so all they got is party chat.

well of course not. but trying to look at it from a business standpoint, if i want to sell you a subscription service, i cant base it off of a party chat. live members pay for online gaming. party chat just happens to be a perk tacked on. i think this sub service from sony will do something like give you download credits, dlc/demo benefits, beta access and similar. party chat may be the last free thing that sony gives to its members.

but its going to be $20 for party chat and someting else...sony has stated several times that online gaming will still be free. which for me is the best way to do it.

I'm assuming it'll be $19-29 a year, and in turn XBL Gold will lower to the same price.
