Heard it on Slice of SciFi today. Hope this is true. Looks like they want to make it a 7 year series doing each book a year at a time. This could rock if done right.

He's the 'gritty and realistic' epic author who has a fetish for killing off characters..

    He's entertaining, though.

Ever since I read A Game of Thrones (book 1) he's been my favorite fantasy author.

His style is like mixing the War of the Roses with a low magic fantasy world. He has a large cast of characters and as mentioned, he does kill them off.

Lots of characters, no character is safe from the axe (literally), magic is kept to a real minimum, focusing mainly on political intrigue. Then there's underage molestations, incest, and lesbian sex. Most of the time there is no clear cut "good guy/bad guy" line drawn. Even the most distasteful characters have moments of genuine likability when they do the right thing. Tyrion will probably be your favorite character. And if HBO does this right it could be bigger than LOTR. I think the books are certainly better.

I really hope they do it right, the few HBO shows I've seen looked very cheaply made.

Cliffs on what this thread is about? I have no idea what "Song of Ice and Fire" refers to.

Great fantasy series by George R.R. Martin. Starts with "A Game of Thrones". Tells the story of the Starks (the good guys, mostly) and the Lannisters (the bad guys, mostly), and the heirs of the old king that are hiding out across the sea waiting to return and reclaim the throne. Very complex plot twists and lots of characters. And being as HBO got the rights and not some shitty network channel, this could be made into a true "adult" fantasy series.

Robert Jordan started to screw up Wheel of Time though, after he hit the 6th or 7th book.... it went from intruiging and supsensful to boring and slow.

book four makes me hardcore sleep; at least it's good as a sleep aid. no fucking tyrion, and much much more politics. fuck. the first three i couldn't put down, and was reading 200+ pages at a time. i hope it gets better in book five.

    is it even out yet?

Book 5, "A Dance with Dragons", was supposed to be out by now, but GRRM still hasn't finished writing it. He' s a major procrastinator. :hs:

I agree with you about Book 4. It's a pretty big disappointment after the first 3. No Tyrion, no Jon Snow, no Arya, no Daenerys. Instead we get Sansa, and Sam Tarley, and Brienne of Tarth.

Yeah, but the next book should be all about what those people were doing during the same time. I still would have preferred a little something about them in book 4 though.

The real question is if the 7th book will be ready in time. There was a huge gap between the 3rd and 4th books.

    from Wiki:
Variet reported on January 17, 2007 that the rights for A Song of Ice and Fire have been sold to HBO with the intent of turning the novels into a television series. Written and executive produced by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, the series is expected to cover one novel's worth of material per season. Martin plans to co-executive produce the series and is expected to write one episode per season. The series will be filmed in Europe or New Zealand.
Martin reported in August 2007 that the first draft of the script is complete and awaiting approval.

The reason why Book 4 is missing half the characters, and it was released so late, was because Book 4 wasn't complete. Martin and the publishers realized that it was just getting too big to be a single book, so they split it. So the result is a book that's more manageable in size, but we also get to read some of it at least, instead of waiting for what he envisioned to be released, which would have been another couple of years.

The good thing out of this, is that book 5 should be released sooner.
