So I watched OneLight and of course was in awe. I loved how much he was able to do with the Sunpak 120J, however of course they are hard as hell to find because Sunpak apparently stopped making them. What would be comparable these days? Alienbee? Im not going to be getting one soon, I am just going to get used to my hotshoe flash setup for now but in the future I would like to know what to keep in mind.

If you find that you can't get the power you need out of your hotshoe flashes, then the next step would be an alienbee. There are some quantum flashes out there that would work too, but a lot more $$$. The draw back to the AB is location shooting (outdoors). You will need a vegabond, or some other type of externapower source. You'll be amazed on what you can get out of your hotshoe flashes.

that is not what he is talking about, I dont think. the 120J was an inexpensive bare bulb flash. When pointed up it will fire light in all directions. The closest a hot shoe can get is if you throw a stofen on it, but I dont think it is nearly as powerful. But I guess the smallest AB could work.

I really should just make my post about my Lumedynes, but quick suggestion would be to look into the old Lumedynes - 065 for 200 w/s and 067 for 400 w/s - or look into old norman 200b or 200c for 200 w/s or 400b for 400 w/s. Not quite as portable as the 120j, but not as bulky as the AB, either. And a 200 w/s pack from either should be more powerful than the 120j and cost around the same price.
