Looks like someone doorbanged me or something.

I planned to just get some turtle wax rubbing compound (it's what I've seen on my Dad's workbench), and rub it out, then wash the rest of the car so there isn't a glossy spot.

The paint is fairly new, and has never been buffed out, so it's very orange-peely. Is there something else that I should get so that I don't make a smooth spot in the otherwise untouched paint?

Even buffing out with a compound isnt going to reduce the orange peel, that would need the attention of wet sanding....But to remove the paint transfer, find a gentle polish, something less abrasive then the compound. You'll be left with some hazing if you use it......

Should I just read the bottles, or is there something specific I should aim for or stay away from?

I'm just doing it by hand, if that helps.

    Thanks!

By hand is no problem, you just need to find a polish at a local store, even Megs #6 would help....Or try #9......

Meguiars Scratch X or Color X would work well.
