love the DOF on the shots. Some are cropped a little tight but looks good.

    Huh.
Why doesn't f/4 looks like that on my P&S.
Yeah, I know it's a P&S, but give me an explanation.

Relation between the size of your sensor and the size of mine -- and the focal length.

Focal length has a larger effect on DOF than aperture size .

Cropping tight > cropping wide for sports. It's more interesting.

Nice shots hashy. Looks like you won the third party lottory as well. :eek3: Your last women's high jump picture is the hottest of the bunch imo. I like how you included a lot of the ground in it.

Do you want to do math ?

For 135/35mm-based cameras, lets say 35-60mm is the normalish range, and 35mm or less for focal lengths are wides. They get more depth of field even with a large aperture than a telephoto would. Telephotos are roughly beyond that 60mm range. Even when using a small aperture, you still have little depth of field, especially when you have a very long focal length.

The distance to subject also figure into depth of field. Being very close to the subject, ie: short focus, will have less DOF than focusing on something far away.

You don't need the mathematical formulas to realize these things in your head and the pictures you take.

    300mm @ f/2.8 and f/4 and even f/8 have similar DOF.

Say the distance to subject is 50ft, and it's a 300mm lens. At f/2.8, DOF is less than 1 foot. At f/4, DOF is 1.3 ft, At f/8 DOf is 2.6 ft.

    That's not a whole lot .

Even if body parts are cropped off? I like the crop on most of them but some are a little too tight.

I actually don't like super-tight after the fact crops .

A super telephoto requires a good bit of working distance, and sometime you're just not gonna get every bit of their body in the frame.

You'd either have to shoot wider and then crop some to get the same overall look or scoot back even more, which was getting annoying since i was at the base of what started to be an incline.

These girls jump -high- and I was panning with their motion, but it's not easy :wtc:

    :greddy:

The eyes are the most important part of the picture and if the frame was moved right, her face would be the edge of teh picture

  22. some of these pics would make for good chopping fun in the main forum :big grin: :mamoru:
