I was amazed that I caught the supersonic waves in 8, since I was pretty startled by the boom

it wasn't supersonic yet, it was transonic... those aren't supersonic waves.. The phenomenon is called the Prandtl-Glauert singularity... usually referred to as a vapor cone.. it's when the plane is near to the sound barrier, the air compresses around the sound waves and the pressure drops and forms that cone at the shockwave of the sound waves..

They don't break the sound barrier at air shows, trust me, if it was a sonic boom you heard, you'd have been a lot more than startled :hsd:

    Sonic booms shatter windows :hsd:

:o well that's interesting to know... I wonder what the boom was when this happened then, I guess just a shock wave?

What lens did you use? I like 7 & 8 because I shot pics two weeks ago in Chicago and it was tough to get those results!

    8 is pretty sweet.

You can see the same effect (much larger) in pictures of Crossroads Baker (2nd Pacific / underwater nuclear test). Also known as the Wilson cloud chamber effect.

You can see a few different things here.

    1) Speed of sound in water >>> speed of sound in air so the shock wave in water is much farther out.
    2) Debris and water being thrown up into the air are in the center of the Cloud Chamber.
    3) The Cloud Chamber itself, the spherical (ish) cloud which is on the backside of the shock wave in the air.

If you look at a picture taken about 10 seconds later, you can see the cloud chamber is completely gone.

In the center is a huge column of water falling back from the blast. It is the force of this falling water that actually sank most of the ships you saw in the first image; studies done afterward showed that most of them survived the shock wave just fine. Then at top you can see the cloud from actual vaporized water.
