I've been trying to level out my white balance for these concerts that have all sorts of coloured lighting, which made some of my other concert shots look a little wonky. I think it's getting a little better. I'm also having to get used to such a small depth of feild with this 50mm, though it's definitely worth the extra light.

    Some pics:

are you using the 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 lens? I'm thinking of buying one soon just wondering how you like it

I have the 1.8. I love it, especially for the price. It delivers alot of light, it focuses fast and it's sharp as hell. If you're used to zooms you're gonna have to get used to it being a prime, but that's about it.

Great shots...What's the name of the band? It looks like an interesting line-up as I just bought a pedal steel guitar myself!

WOW great shots.. most people who post concert shots use like ridiculous exposure times and it looks like psychedellic art, which sucks if you want to see the band members, excellent sharpness..

I've shot some stuff for bands that have been used as promotional stuff, but for the most part, I do it for myself/because I like it/for practise. When I show the bands the shots they're usually really pumped, because as most people have noted, live band photography usually either looks all blurry or is flat flash stuff.

:werd: whats the secret in minimizing motion blur, because we all know the flash isnt even an option

Using a lens with the lowest manageable f-stop. This lens is a 50mm 1.8, which is only really outdone by the 50mm 1.4. The word is the 1.4 isn't its sharpest at 1.4 amyways, whereas the 1.8 is pretty much sharp all the way through. 1.4 is also gives you an ever shorter depth of feild which can be hard to work with. The other strategy is bumping your ISO and doing your best to manage noise.

you seriously need to lower the noise reduction use, on some pictures it isnt noticeable but on others they are starting to look like clay

otherwise they are real good shots, you did really good on keeping the feeling of the concerts alive.

I usually REALLY hate band photography so it's nice to see some actual good photos of a band for once.

Yeah, on some of them I think I overdid it. The last time I posted photos I got some heat over too much noise. Thanks for the response though. It's good to know that people can notice it, and I should find a better balance.

How do you like the Sigma 70-200? I've been looking at that lens because the Nikon 70-200 VR is just too fucking expensive. How much did you pay for it?

I got mine used on Nikon Cafe, to be honest, havent had a chance to use it alot. But the pics I have taken with it are great. The focus is lightning fast.

Most the pics on www.flickr.com/photos/billwoodcock were taken with it.
All except the wings of paradise shots, and the Tragically Hip.

Ill post my shots form my bar band shoot tomorrow night when i get home.

EDIT... ignore the red eye in some of the pics, I uploaded the wrong ones.. hahaha...
