My wife's office went bowling for Big Brothers and Big Sisters today, I decided to try my hand at dragging the shutter with the flash to get some motion. I think they're kind of meh. Shot with my SB800 at about 1/4 in shutter priority. i was using a lumiquest softbox on my SB800

The softbox does a pretty good job at head on flash diffusion. It's not ideal but works in a pinch. This is some random girl volunteering

I just thought this was cute.

What's the shutter speed? I think I would've prefer if the shutter speed was a bit faster to prevent transparent arms/hands & legs/feet.

yeah, i was trying to get the right amount of blur without doing the transparent - it was hard to get right. I played around shooting from 1/20 to 1/45 :dunno:

Rear curtain sync. that'll allow you to get the blur without a ghost leading your subject.

So i use rear curtain with the same slowed shutter instead? I've never played with that.

you may still wind up with the transparent, rather than blurred action, but it'll be trailing the motion, rather than leading it, as the flash will isolate your subject just as the shutter is closing.

yep, rear curtain sync. it will help greatly, especially in low light motion shots

bowling would be really hard to shoot.
personally I don't like the flash, and the shots seem really soft, I would've got the high ISO route.

I took some bowling photos last weekend and I couldn't get the lighting to come out right. Tried WB, shutter priority, flash, no flash, ugh...

Wouldn't a faster shutter/smaller fstop/higher iso in combination with flash fix that?

The reason he's getting the ghosting is because there is enough ambient light to expose his subject, then the flash pops and exposes his subject again. He'll get ghosting using rear curtain sync also, but it will be slightly more visually appealing
