Does anyone know of any application I can download to try and stress test my webserver? I basically just want it to hit a specific url, and refresh like 1,000 times...

I think refreshing it 1,000 times would hurt you, not the webserver.

Once the page is hit once, it would be cached into your computer. So the rest of the 999 refreshes would be pointless.

There is a linux application called hammerhead that will do exactly what you are looking for. As for a windows version I dunno.

If you're hosting with an ISP and the you're on a shared server (aka: there's other web accounts being hosted by the ISP on the same box you wisht to test), PLEASE contact the ISP before hand. If you interrupt web availability to any of the sites on that box, the ISP now has some teeth to come after you and make the next several years of your life rather miserable...

If its a personal server on a personal network, then beat the snot out of it.

Excellent point. Also don't do something like this is you pay by how much bandwidth you use.

Its free: Get your page to be slashdotted! :) (http://slashdot.org)

They will bring your server to its knees for several hours at least.

I'm sure there's something out there to do this, but I don't have anything in my collection that does only because I haven't had a huge need...

Use Wankiller by SolarWinds. You can download the trial, but if you want to buy it, it's like a $1,000 program, heh. Very useful if you plan on doing network administration.

Sorry. :hs: I have to laugh.

OK, slashdot is a news site that has reader submitted stories. If you submit a link to a story/article/project/idea that is hosted on your machine it will get thousands of hits within the next couple days. But only a small percentage of the stories are even posted on the main page, so you better be original.
