I'm building something of a media center PC for my living room and want to start copying my DVDs to hard drive.
I've ripped a couple, but can't find any good software to encode the various files to divx.

    Any suggestions?

Fairuse wizard looks nice. DVD player supports both divx and xvid, so this sounds perfect for me

  7. AOA DVD Ripper for very high-quality rips (if you don't mind them on the large end).

I just tried it and it encoded 3 of my movies perfectly.
Took about 5 hours to do 3 of them, but they came out just fine.

Anyone know how rip TV DVDs to hard drives? Sick of changing DVDs every four episodes :hs: Is it the same way as a film DVD? Also, any freeware programs or are they all shareware with stupid limitations

Are you saying x264 is better quality from a dvd player rather than playing the file from a HD?

I rip everything to avi. I store on my HD though. Don't use dvd players.

    Good to know.

I have used two programs for a while now. Both are free programs. First I use dvddecrypter to rip the DVD to my HD. Then I use Handbrake to encode into an *.avi file. It will encode to many different types. I have *never* had a problem with this configuration. It allows you to set size limits and many other things also. Very very good programs for this type of thing.
