I was wondering if anyone has came across a free/open-source way to wrap a standard installer (exe) into an MSI installer for deployment via GPO in an Active Directory environment in a relatively straight-forwarded way?

    Cheers,
    Jason

There's a package on the Windows Server 2000 disc (in the \VALUEADD folder I believe) that lets you take snapshots of machines before and after installing software on them, and then it compiles the difference between the two snapshots into .MSI files.

It is also, understandably, on the Windows 2003 Server disc, and I can't remember the name of it right now (I think it is WinINSTALL LE)

Put this software somewhere on a network share or some place not on the local computer's hard drive. You do not want to end up with the .msi creation software inside your actual .msi file, which is what will happen if you leave it on the local computer during snapshotting.

if it's on the machine PRIOR to the baseline snapshot being taken then it wouldn't be in the .msi.
