EDIT: Holy fuck I suck at fixing eyes in photoshop. Ignore that while I try to fix.

I know you guys love seeing close ups of me all the time but I figured i'd give a break.

Whats up with that shadow under the eyes... whats it coming from?

I think these are my best yet with the new softbox. The focus is a bit soft on a few since i was shooting at 2.8 and was more worried about the lights. After the next shoot I think im going to be very comfortable with my 3 point lighting and I'll be confident to start getting paying clients.

One thing I noticed is having the backlight be straight flash without using an umbrella doesn't really provide the best results. I am going to start using an umbrella for that. Some of these also have some strange shadows on them that I need to work out.

    yeah, your photoshop skills blow.

shadows on the eyes come from too hard a light source being too close. You can also see this in the really hard, complete with C.A. catchlight in her eye, and the equally hard shadows where her hair meets her face, which, btw is *this* close to being blown out.

Not sure what you used for a light source there, but it's really hard.

Catchlight makes it look like bare flash or the sun or something small and focused.

Rest of em are good, but you really need to set your focus dot to the subjects eyes. Everything else can be oof except the eyes, and the portrait is still good. As soon as the eyes go even the slightest bit out, the shot is trash.

The really bright light in the first pic, camera L is the umbrella?

    That doesn't make sense.

The majority of the light is coming from Camera L on that pic. Look at the L side of her face. It's just about blown.

See the catchlight in her R eye, which is camera L - what is that light?

Whatever it is, soften the fuck out of it.

if your focus is on the eyes, you can soften her skin and the hair and no one notices.

Yah I was focusing on the eye but who knows what happened. Maybe my focus, hold half and recompose skills aren't right or something. Although sometimes i was focusing the far eye instead of the near eye. Lesson learned its in the back of my head now.

It should be, yah. Wonder why its so harsh. I wonder if the softbox didnt fire on that shot? Unless it's the bar strobe but that was behind her so i dont know how it could be giving a catch light

yep, it changes the * button to focus, and will meter for that spot (if your using one of the semi-manual modes) then you can recompose and shoot, and shoot multiple times without having to go back and re-focus/recompose every time.

give it a try once, once you get used to it, you will love it, and never wanna go back (or at least I did :wiggle: )
