what settings are you guys using for jpg shooting? I'm shooting with a cheapo 50mm 1.8, which I know isn't going to give me beautiful shots, but I was expecting a bit more

I don't know what you're saying, but posting some pics would help.

that's because I'm an idiot. I'm saying that my camera is taking pretty soft pictures, even stopped down. Let me get a few up here, give me a few minutes

The 30D and kit lens combo (or your nifty fifty) is perfectly capable of delivering sharp images.

I doubt a tripod is the problem, especially with a f/1.8 lens

I just snapped these "test shots" (hand held, no tripod :) ) aka a good reason to have another beer ;)

blinds closed in my apt, had a florescent light in the kitchen, and the dining room light on behind me

    This was taken at ISO 400, f/1.8, 1/100 (with my 50 1.8)

    no PP done

yes, mine is shitty, but I was trying to give a good representation of what the lens will do in shitty light (hence why I closed the blinds, and only used the lights inside).

Anything with better light should be a lot better.

If his pictures are softer than what I posted, then I think he has a problem.

the 50 is kinda soft at 1.8, and you're shooting at iso 400.

that combo is your problem. Shoot at 4 on iso 100 and you'll see a HUGE difference.

I was more or less trying to prove you can shoot handheld with it in shitty lighting and not have a completely blurry image.

Go see my firework thread of good shots with the nifty fifty

As a scientist you now have to admit your hypothesis was wrong and publish your results.

My 50 is plenty sharp I think that you might be focusing on the wrong area.

Or you could be really drunk and can't hold steady @ 1/100th

a resized shot won't show a whole lot, you could afford to lose a few soft pixels

took a few pics of my car in the evening, I guess it came out fairly good for being black, tough to get the exposure right. I shot in RAW + JPG L. Here's the RAW shot, backed down the exposure a stop. The little picture in the top left is the 100% crop. I'm just not sure what to expect out of the 100% crops, so if anyone has anything to share that would be great

it defniitely came out much better than my indoor shots, which I guess the lighting was to blame
