I know there are a few indoor ranges down here, but I'm wondering if there are any places in the middle of nowhere that are safe to shoot, which also means legal to shoot at.

    Anyone know any spots?

There is all kinds of competive shooting in So Cal. 3 gun, uspsa/ipsc, steel, idpa. A lot more fun than just punching paper or soda cans.

Yeah, I'm aware of competitive shooting, but I don't even own a firearm yet, just trying to see what I can do when I do make a purchase.

Are you looking for actual ranges or BLM out in the desert?

Calguns is definitely a good idea, you should also stop by the BLM office in the area you want to shoot and get a map. Keep in mind the BLM people may not like shooters (at least it seemed that way to me at the Palm Desert office,) so it might also be a good idea to check with the local gun shops. The BLM person I talked to wanted me to take a 4x4 only trail about 1.5 hours away from their office to a tiny little poorly defined area to shoot. The store I stopped at (Condor guns, great place by the way,) told me of a place maybe 20 minutes from their store thats easily accessible and on BLM land where all the locals go.
