I bought a Bushmaster Texas DPS edition M4 carbine recently. It's stock, I haven't done anything to it. It's your canvas...what would you do to it if you were in my spot?

    A3 (removable) carry handle
Stepped 16” chrome lined 1/9 “ barrel with flashhider
    Oversize hand guard
6 position butt stock with staked castle nut
    M4 feed cuts
    Carrier key screws staked
    Sling
    One 30 round magazine
    Hard case
    Texas Star Stamped

This is how Texas DPS outfits it when they get it: [IMG]

i'd leave it as is and just shoot the piss out of it. put 1000-2000 rounds downrange before worrying about anything else.

I added an eotech, and then removed it and put the carry handle back on. Eotech will go on some other toy. the front sight in the way pissed me off too much.

and then added a vertical foregrip via a little piece of rail attached to the hand guard.

    thats it.

First more mags and lots of ammo and range time. Eventually some sort of optic like an aimpoint or eotech.

What do you plan on using it for? Plinking, hunting, zombies, etc?

  9. Buy ammo and magazines. Go shoot it... a lot. You don't need anything fancy, skill is much more important than fancy equipment.

    Check. Picked up 10 PMags...so I now have 12 30-round mags :)

  12. Good. Just practice with it a lot. If you can, take a carbine class. Like I said, skill is the most important factor in your shooting.

Is the carrier key really staked? And did it come that way from BM or is the retailer doing it?

if you REALLY wanted to be technical, an M4 Carbine is either Colt's RO977, RO979, RO777, or RO779.

All of them have the 14.5" barrel with unpinned A2 flash suppressor, M203 cut in a barrel that's .750" outer diameter from the FSB forward, and a lightweight profile under the handguards.
All are selective-fire. The first two are flattop upper (S-1-A, then S-1-3 on the selector), the second two have A2 fixed carry handles with sights (same selector order).

    :mamoru:

I have the Colt LEO catalog in .pdf form on my hard drive. It includes all the M4 types, all the LE carbines, the M203, and the 9mm SMG, and maybe more, I forget exactly.
