PSYOP stands for Psychological Operations. The official objectives of Psyop are to persuade, change, influence, and or reinforce those attitudes, actions, and behaviors of the target audience, whomever they may be.

there are two types of psyop, tactical, and stratgic. i have been tactical, so this is what we will discuss first.

    TACTICAL PSYOP-
Works in small 3 man teams, or possibly as an individual psyopper in a MIST.(Military Information Support Team) As tctical Psyopper, you will work exclusively with S.F., Rangers, or Infantry. You will do what they do; kick in doors, cordon and searches, patrol the streets, etc etc. But, you have your Psyop mission to do as well. That is to gain passive intel, by word of mouth, what you see, or pictures you take.
You will talk with high ranking military personell, elected officials, and the average guy on the street. from this you will build rapport, make assessments, gain intel, and or conduct Psyacts against the target audience in order to influence attitudes, actions, or behaviors.
The most famous thing psyop is probably known for is their use of loudspeakers. You will use them. sometimes to just play music for personal enjoyment, and at times to wage your psywar by broadcasting anything from surrender appeals, to public announcements,to harrassment(babies crying/cats meowing) to deception missions.(playing noises of tanks, helo's,firefights etc)
All in all, its like being infantry(thats read as having combat fun) but without all the bullshit the infantry does.(thats read as no gate gaurd, px gaurd, fire watch, uniformity rules, hands in pockets etc) You have to be quick thinking to be a good psyopper, be analytical, and have tact. You have to know how to act in a situation to accomplish your objectives.

All active duty Psyoppers are stationed at FT. Bragg NC. there are currently no off the street enlistments into active duty Psyop that i know of at this time(they just shut the mos down like a month ago to off the street enlistee's, but you may go Psyop if you enlist in the reserves) this could change at any time, so dont just take it from here. you may transfer to psyop from any mos once your in, provided you can pass the DLAB, and score a 70 on your asvab with a 110 gt score. (thats the standard as far as i know)

as active duty psyop, you will go to airborne school, and language school. sere is also easily obtained, but not mandatory yet as far as i know.

reserve component psyoppers do not have automatic airborne and language school positions. you must wait your turn on an order of merit list. there is a good chance youll never attend those schools in the reserves. i never did.

and a note for officers wanting to transfer to psyop, no LT's allowed. seriously. must be a captain or better. there are no psyop warrants either... but the word is that theyre trying to get psyop warrants.

ill fill in more info as i get time. but this should do for now. post questions and ill respond as i have time as well.

1LT's however can apply for PSYOP or Civil Affairs when their Year Group comes up. YG07 is eligible to apply til December.

    good thread man

I have been weighing my reclass options recently, and PSYOP is one of the ones in the back of my head...not my first choice I think, but it seems interesting enough to consider it.

If you are reserves, you can transfer to a PSYOPS or CA unit directly out of OBC. Since the two branches have taken a larger role in active duty, they assess very few people per year. Its almost easier getting on the SFAS list as a 1LTP

PSYOP/IO/CIMIC are reserve taskings up here, which sucks because I'd definitely be interested in doing that down the road. We dont have the MOS per say, we have Intelligence Operators, who handle everything from imagery analysis to HUMINT to manning the G2, but you can apply for a specialty usually at Cpl/MCpl.

what do active duty psyops officers do? I remember my old roommate asking this question here not to long ago, but i dont quite remember.

BTW, the TPTs in our BDE did none of that shit. They would sometimes come out on patrol and collect passive shit, or use the loudspeakers, but we would NEVER allow them to conduct raids or be an active part of a patrol. Nothing more than another enabler along for the ride.
They still had to adhere to uniform standards, etc. They were just another group of soldiers in the BN. Our Humint guys thought they could get away with that shit too, wearing civilian clothes all the time like they were fucking SF.

ahahah that seems to be norm of HUMINT Collector Teams (HCT) and TPTs, they all walk around acting like they are "cool guys"
The groups I was deployed with acted in the same manner, overall they were a great group of guys though and very skilled at what they do, so the Command let them operate the way they wanted
