Man Pulls Gun on Kids Who Rang Doorbell

Updated: Tuesday, 08 Dec 2009, 3:15 PM CST

Austin Police have arrested Richard Yax for possession of a prohibited weapon after they say he pulled a gun on three children who rang his doorbell and ran off.
According to court documents, the children admitted to playing pranks on homes in the neighborhood in Avery Ranch. They said that one of them would ring the doorbell and hide with the other children in the nearby brush.
The children said when they rang the doorbell at Yax’s home, he exited the house holding a semi-automatic rifle resembling an M-16. After Yax went back inside his home, the children ran from their hiding spots. They told police that Yax began to follow them with his rifle.
Police say Yax cornered them in a nearby cul-de-sac and pointed the gun at the children’s heads. He then allegedly threatened the children with the gun unless they returned to his home to apologize to his family for waking them. The children told police that they began crying and Yax let them go.
The children told their parents what had happened and police were called. Police went to Yax’s home and rang his doorbell. There was a sign taped above the doorbell that said to go home and stop ringing the doorbell.
Police say that Yax initially admitted only to speaking to the boys within his yard. Then they say he admitted to using a toy rifle when talking to the children and finally admitted to using a real rifle.
Court documents show that police went inside the home and found an AR-15 rifle in a room nearby the front door. Police say they also found a magazine loaded with armor piercing bullets.
Yax told police that he believed that somebody might be trying to hurt him. He told police that he did not realize they were children until he caught up with them.
Police discovered that Yax had an outstanding warrant out in his name for theft by check. He was arrested for that warrant, possession of the armor piercing bullets, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Wonder what they are calling armor piercing bullets. If they are just standard 62gr steel core could be interesting

I thought if you had a warrant out for your arrest you were NOT supposed to draw attention to yourself?

The article doesn't say, but if they'd done it during the night time, he could have shot them just for the ring and run.

Now if you're asking if he should have, or if I think it would have been right, hell no. I think this issue could have been solved in a much more constructive fashion with water balloons.

Criminal mischief is usually damaging another persons property.

I guarantee you, that shooting children for ding-dong ditch will land you in the slammer.
