main thread has moved here http://forums.offtopic.com/showthread.php?p=98955046

I could spend up to say $600-700 bucks, but the phone better be the fucking shit. I've never owned a smartphone before and wish this one to be the only one for a long time. so lets get it right.

looking for a decent mobile internet experience. decent qwerty keyboard. good PDA functions (calendar and such), wifi not necessary but certainly encouraged. I do not give a shit about how nice of a camera it has. not looking to go the iphone route, unless someone has proof a version is to be released that would function on verizon's network in the foreseeable future. then I would consider it I suppose. I have at least 2 years left with verizon and am generally happy with their service here.

note- I played around with the LG voyager the other day at the verizon store and was actually somewhat impressed. only problem is its not exactly a smartphone, is locked down like fort knox, and of course its made by LG

and if you can make a case for one of the formal smartphone offerings offered by verizon, I suppose lets here that too.

    ready go

The new Curve 8330 releases in a few weeks... full QWERTY & records video.
GSM version 8320 has WiFi but sacrifices recording video.
    Then, there's the Palms.
And, the WinMo devices... I don't care too much about those.

It is CDMA, but until they open up their network, they're going to continue to have garbage for phones.

Even when Verizon opens up their network, it still doesn't mean shit. Spring, VZW, Alltel, and the other CDMA carriers all have the same devices anyways. You can't use GSM phones on VZW's network because the tech is just NOT compatible. If you want a better choice of phones, switch to AT&T or T-Mobile. Since like 80% of the world uses GSM, phone companies produce far more GSM handsets than CDMA, and only regurgitate the more popular GSM devices for the CDMA market in general.

If/when they actually open things up, they'll at least be getting CDMA phones at the same time as Sprint, instead of 6 months later as companies tailor the phone for VZW.

Anyways, if you want decent internet, Blackberry is NOT the way to go, nor is Palm OS. Windows Mobile devices have various 3rd party options for internet, and there are some great ones - Opera Mobile 9.5 is coming out soon and it'll be great, and Skyfire works decently well too. Touchscreen devices work better with internet browsing, but non-touchscreen models are fine too. On VZW, your best option is probably the Moto Q9C (not M) whenever it finally comes out. Or you can get the Touch. the 6800 doesn't have enough RAM to be useable IMO.

No, they won't. Other devices still have to be "approved" by verizon. More than likely, you can get a sprint device up and running the same day that Sprint launches them, but that just means that you're paying a $300 premium to use the same device 4 months earlier.
