umm...how many people do you see making a 200-500 f/2.8 lens? they can realistically charge whatever they want, within reason, because of demand and there is no competition. not to mention the fact that the lens weighs 35 pounds alone, do you realize how much precision ground glass there is in that thing? in comparision the nikon 600mm f/4 is only 11 pounds.

I dont care what it is.

I would never pay that much money for something made by Sigma. Thats just me personally.

To answer your question though, show me some examples of other 200-500 f/2.8 lenses currently in production.

Sorry aperture in that since meant the size of the front opening. I forgot that photogs use it differently than its used in astronomy. We are usually using primes like my telescope is a 2032mm f/10 but in astronomy terms its an 8" telescope.

What about Evan? You don't happen to know me do you? I know a lot of people and never pay attention.

The aperture itself at 500mm will be 7 inches (500mm/10cm/2.54in/2.8 = 7.0303). I dont know what the size of the front element is though. Gigantic.

and its a simple matter of supply and demand. can you find a cheaper 200-500 f/2.8 out on the market? same reason the 1200mm canon lens is $100k, although this sigma comes with a 2x extender that will put you out to 1000mm for a hell of a lot less money. :o
