    Like BGen (ret'd) Xxxx Xxxxxx?

In canada it means that you are using the person's last rank out of respect but that they no longer have that rank's authority or responsibilities, im guessing its the same in the states

    Retired is 20+ yrs service.

If 6 and out - they are "discharged" and there are levels of discharge.

Just throwing this in there: anyone who has served is a veteran, regardless of retirement.

They can, but it all goes back to their DD124. I know with burial rights, if the DD214 doesn't say RETIRED, they get a 2 man flag fold and taps... Period. Doesn't matter who they call, who they knew, etc. Had a funeral director while I was on Honor Guard tell me that the person we were burying was "highly connected to the military...". And me being the good 2-striper I was, quickly said "Sir, according to the military, he is a veteran who did not retire. Therefore we are here for his burial rights." He was all pissy that there was only 2 of us... Ugh. But, yes... The "retired" thing is a designation on the DD214.
