I was talking with some friends, and one of my friends has this hippie, douche-bag type girlfriend who goes "why do you like guns any ways, is it like a penis-replacement"

I told her it was the precision engineering that I appreciated. Sure, a car has amazing engineering, too but you can't feel it like you do in a firearm. Especially a semi-automatic. All the parts working together in such a harmonious manner. Nothing can compare.

What do you guys say? Why do you like guns?

because it proves that I can be superior to others in terms of repeatability and muscle control

im the same, i cant get over how precise the parts in a semi auto pistol or rifle are, and then how fast they move... :eek3:

and the reason i shoot is because im only competing against myself... no other person can affect whether i hit or miss the next target, its all me, which is kinda why i like golf too :hs:

it really frustrates me how people can be so ignorant on a particular topic and yet come to some hard and fast conclusion, from which they will not budge...

I love the precision that it requires. The concentration. The skill to do it well. The feeling of accomplishment I get from improving. The smell of the gun powder. The rush of the bang. The recoil. The disassembling, cleaning, and care afterwards. The deadly beauty of the machine.

It's a lot like driving a fast car. Of course, she'd probably hate that too.

    amazing speed, definitely
you need good material to stand the kind of stress a firearm goes through
heat, and rapid movement, and all sorts of nasty weather conditions!

    true that
i've only been shooting once, but i can't wait to go again and again to improve my aim

yah, but that goes with just about anything in the world- guns, people with dark skin or accents, abortion, drugs, i could go on forever
it's definitely important to keep your mind open with any subject matter!

Hahah, yah, she rides her bike anywhere within ten miles
that's kinda cool- saves money on gas, and promotes a healthy lifestyle
except she spends a lot of money on pot, and eats like a pig
BUT SHE'S SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT BY RIDING HER BIKE SO IT'S OK!
(i really don't like this girl, but i tolerate her b/c her boyfriend is one of my closest friends)

    Self defense
    Hunting
We used them to kill coyotes when my grandma kept pigs on her farm

    But mainly for self defense.
Anything that can save my life, I wouldnt want to go without.

Plus they are great for sports. I love to go to the range and practice. I love to spend a while aiming at a target with my .22 at 50 + yards with my scope, trying to get that perfect shot.

They are fun AND they serve a purpose.

They also help us win our independence. Just think what it would have been like if the redcoats had the guns, and all we had were bows and arrows like goddamned stinking indians.

    Also, the power is sexy

ditto that! I want a .50 for precisely that reason. I think that being able to put a round in the same place over and over again is such a rewarding thing. And knowing you can do it again.

I am a big fan of both cars and guns (I'm an engineer and cars are my work so go figure....) and in both I get the pleasure of precision and using somehting that is a quality instrument.

It is not nearly as straightforward as those who have never appreciated or even used either one could assume, it's nothing to do with penis-envy, or even replacement of attention for most people, and yes that is the most commonly presumed justification. I believe that is just people displaying their ignorance.

Ask her "are those earrings you're wearing a replacement for your A-cups?"

    or

"that makeup isn't going to make your double chin go away"

    That should shut her up.

for me it has nothing to do w/ caliber, or action, or anything else, i enjoy the fact tht i can take out a penny consistantly at 100yds w/ my 22 target rifle.

because it put's me in control of something. Unlike riding goddamned horses. I decide where the round goes and when I pull the trigger.

I like them because for me, they are a stress reliever. Somehow, when that bullet exits the barrel...it pulls all my cares and worries downrange with it.

Lots of different reasons, the craftsmanship for one. Its not like a car or a computer where a lot of things are a mystery unless you are an electrical engineer, yeah you may get the basics but you never understand every single part unlike with a firearm. Also I enjoy something that's well made, having the right type of metal, treated the right way, machined just so, all the parts serving their function with the others. That goes for anything, a flashlight, a firearm, a knife, hell even a sandwich. Then of course theres the satisfaction of improving your skill, the way that concentrating on your shooting can make you forget about the rest of your day. Even aside from those reasons they are still fun. Plus its always a laugh getting the hippies all riled up.
