    you cant follow the standard,
    1. go to the range
    2. shoot the pistols your interested in
    3. buy the pistol you like,
    4. ????
    5. profit.

There are no ranges around here that rent guns that I know of.

Do you just pick one that feels good in your hand and hope it works out well?

Well, how it feels and how it sights are two important things. If you can't shoot a pistol but you have found one that meets the above criteria, read about if. If you stick with well known brands, chances are you are going to get something good.

You drive someplace that has a range and man up. Some guns just shoot like shit for some people and fondling them won't tell you which ones those are. Many people love glocks, I'm more accurate with a bow and arrow than a glock. My sig shoots the balls off a fly. Most guys that have tried my HK couldn't group inside 10 inches (they're not operators and obviously I hate them) but I can drop mofos all day with it (I'm an operator).

The ideal is to rent/borrow the gun you want to buy to make sure it works for you... but I honestly don't do this. I tend to just do research online to see what others are saying about a gun I am thinking about purchasing. Then I handle sed gun to make sure it feels right to me. Then I buy it.

Guns aren't that expensive really. In any event, if I really don't like the way it shoots, I can always sell it to someone else for little to no loss.

I was in the same situation, closest range that rented guns was 3 hours away, and at the time I didn't know a single person who had any sort of pistols I was interested in. I ended up buying based on the gazillion reviews I read, and feeling them in the shops. I've been called an idiot and dumbass by some for not shooting before I bought, but it worked out for me. I'm happy with my purchase, even after I got a chance to shoot others that I was considering (after I purchased).

    Now I know I could've done this:
Buy some ammo for the type of gun you're considering. Go to the local range (we have a public, free outdoor range), and find someone that looks nice and knows what they're doing. Ask them about their gun, and see if they'll let you shoot it (give them the ammo/use your ammo). I've met people at the range that are very nice and eager to show someone the correct way to do things, and don't mind letting non-idiots try out their guns.

:werd: I let a guy shoot my PS90 at the range with my ammo, just because he was so excited to see one. All gun owners were at the same place you are and most remember it and wont hesitate to help you.
