Someone very close to me is dealing with getting over a relationship and I want to try and help, but other than just trying to cheer them up by hanging out and being there, I don't know what else to do. Heck, that maybe all I can do.

    umm yeah

just offer your time and company, thats all you can do.

Anyone dealing with a breakup is more than happy to get their mind off of it. I know I did.

Not much except offer some advise from personal experience, and give them enough time to deal with it on their own.

If they ask for advice, I give advice. Usually can turn most people's attitudes around. Persuasion towards the positive. Of course they're going to grieve the loss, but punctuation marks always help -- pausing to do something with them, go out, hit a movie, eat, or just listen to them.

If this is a girl you're interested in who is "the friend" -- don't give any advice at all, just listen. Different rules apply to women you're interested in.

I just try to listen and offer my company/time. If they ask for advice or my thoughts, I'll give it.
