Say they've been in the military for 6 years....what can they do once they get out? Do they get alternate training?

Get your degree when you are in. Tuition assistance. Or use your GI bill when you get out.

So it's either contract work out in Iraq and Afghanistan or pretty much worthless jobs?

    Unless you study of course.

14 more years in, switch to recruiting, get a degree with GI bill, then collect a pension check at 38 and get a job in middle management

Lesseee.....my dad was 20 years infantry...retired as an E7 in 95 and been working at a factory ever since. I spent three years with Air Defense (reclassed to Cav right before medical discharge as a E5) and now I deliver pizzas.

Take advantage of schooling, and hope you don't live in a state who's job economy sucks as bad as Michigan's....

There is Blackwater, KBR, and a few others that I know of. A friend of mine that retired from Delta had a resume that sounded impressive but lacked any civilian-type skills. "Served with indiginous population in austere conditions..."
Dont feel bad though, I worked on AV-8B Harriers, CH-53's, and CH-46's while I was in the Marine Corps for 6 years. When I got out I couldnt find a job to save my life! I was offered jobs working for the Royal Saudi Air Force and an outfit in Columbia doing drug interdiction crap, but at the time wanted to stay in the United States so I foolishly turned them down. I spent the last 2 years working on refrigeration and HVAC systems which pays good but the hours suck! I am going back on active to finish my 20 ASAP. Take advantage of all the edu programs while on active, get a degree, even if it is underwater basket weaving! Everyone has a degree nowadays, but not everyone has the military on their resume. Put the two together with your discipline, motivation, and an outgoing personality and I can see no reason why you wouldnt land a decent job. As hard as it sounds figure out what you want to do with your life post-military and work towards it. Getting out not having a clue is not good at all....been there done that. If all else fails Construction is your friend.
