Where does the 20% failure rate come from? Does this imply that ~20% of the time the condom breaks? Or do semen somehow make their way through an intact condom... :hsugh:

    I'm curious.

PS - I finished inside of my gf twice this month when she was on amoxicillin (and the birth control pill), i only found out recently that antibiotics "may decrease the effectiveness of the pill in some women". How worried should i be?

Worried enough to be more cautious. Get her on BC.

I'd be worried if the tests come back positive.

Yes, 20% is the condom breaking or semen leaking out anyway.. especially if there isn't a proper fit or seal.

Yes, antibiotics can decrease the strength of BC, and yes, condoms don't always protect. But more importantly, don't have unprotected sex unless you are willing to face the consequences.

She is on the pill and takes it on time, we're both clean (we lost our virginities to eachother). There is no logical reason to use more protection.

Sure there is. Why not be as safe as possible while still being able to have sex?

She's doing something to lessen the chances of pregnancy, why shouldn't you?

Because if a girl is taking the pill properly the chances of pregnancy are incredibly small. Is it logical to use the pill, a condom, spermicide, and pull-out? absolutely not... you have to weigh the risk vs. benefits.

Mathematically if the pill is set at 99% effectiveness and a condom is at 80% effectiveness, using both decreases the chance of pregnancy from 1% (with pill alone) to 0.2%. Is 0.8% worth the hassle, reduced pleasure, killing the mood, etc. etc. In my eyes, no but im sure some disagree.

Although in my situation earlier this month where my gf was on antibiotics it is definitely a good call to take extra percautions. Luckily i just got off the phone with her and her period has arrived. phew..

According to planned parenthood, with perfect use it is 98% effective and with typical use it is 85%. Typical use means things like they didn't use a condom every single time, it broke, they had sex for a few minutes before putting it on, they didn't put it on properly (leaving room at the tip for cum), or they kept on having sex after he came.

I wouldn't go that far. Even with perfect use, 2 women out of every 100 would get pregnant each year. It's certainly better than not using anything but it's not perfect so you should always be prepared for a possible pregnancy.

Yes, but the chances of not "taking the pill properly" are significant and should also be considered.

In other words, the pill itself may not screw up, but the person taking it sure can.

    I googled condom effectiveness.
    Found this site http://www.advocatesforyouth.org/publications/factsheet/fscondom.htm#references

    with this interesting little snippet.
"In one year, only two of every 100 couples who use condoms consistently and correctly will experience an unintended pregnancy—two pregnancies arising from an estimated 8,300 acts of sexual intercourse, for a 0.02 percent per-condom pregnancy rate."

Its also referenced to a journal article.

Anyway thats a 98% effectiveness rate/year/couple or 99.98% per condom used rate. Thats fairly different from this magic 80%.

Also, user mistakes make-up some of that failure rate.
IE- Not putting it on correctly, not withdrawing before losing the erection, not pinching the tip ...ect

How many times does it take to get a girl pregnant when you're trying for a baby? Obviously it's not usually perfect first time... I'll pull a number out of my ass and say 30% of the time with unprotected sex a girl can get pregnant (i have no idea on the real numbers, i'm not clued up on this :o).

When the pill says "98% effective" is it 98% effective on top of the above?

Most guys are dumb. One of my friends who has sex failry often didn't know you can put a condom on inside out. He had one pop and I was like that is why...

wait a sec...so all this time, when i saw that condoms are say 98% effective, i thought that meant if you have sex 100 times with a condom used properly, there's a 2% chance you'll get pregnant.

from reading this, i get the feeling it means that out of all the people having sex with condoms effectively for a year, 2% will get pregnant...that's a LOT different.

:werd: If you don't want to use condoms then she should get on a BC that's not as easy to screw up like the shot/patch/nuvaring.

    You left out this part.

"With typical use, 85 percent relying on male condoms will remain pregnancy free"

In 1 year 85 out of 100 women would get knocked up with no BC. If something is 98% it means that in 1 year 2 out of 100 women would get knocked up.
