From what I read on how to use them, You take a reading off that grey card and then take a shot with the grey card in the photo. you then shoot the series with that exposure and then edit in PS. I think I am lost.

All you really need to do is to take a reading off the gray card. That's how you determine the correct exposure to begin with. Shooting a test shot with the gray card in the pic is fine for extremely anal post production but is usually un-necessary.

So I just put the grey card in front of my subject and get the reading. Then do I adjust the shutter or the aperture?

no, figure out your DOF need/min shutter speed needed, put that in, meter

if you're an AV/TV shooter make sure no exposure compensation is dialed in. the camera will get the correct exposure.

Make sure the gray card is prominent and well lit, down angle it down or have it in the corner of the image, for your purpose it needs to be the subject

so why not just shoot a white card, then shoot your subjects.

Then later in PP, adjust all of your white balance off that one picture of the white card? (this is assumng all your pics are in the same light/setting)

white balance and exposure are two different things. He is talking about using a gray card to get an accurate exposure reading.

Ok so lets say i read the grey card at f/3.5 and the shutter reads at 1/250. That is the correct exposure for that F/stop? I take the grey card away and shoot all my photos at that exposure?

So what if I dont like that much DOF and want say f/11. So when I move the ring down to f/11, the shutter speed is going to need to be moved up or down?

Also how would I bring the flash into play with the grey card?

print out a little sliding aperture and shutter speed guide.

    f/3.5 @ 1/250
    f/4 @ 1/200
    f/5.6 @ 1/100
    f/8 @ 1/50
    f/11 @ 1/25

    nope.

    2.8 - 3 - 3.5 - 4, so 3.5 to 4 is only a third of a stop change, then the next are all whole stop increments.

Got it. Now what about the flash. Can you shoot with the grey card and flash?

Does anybody actually just take their camera out of the fucking bag and play with it anymore? All of these questions could be figured out by a monkey with five minutes of shutter time.

I got my first DSLR @ Christmas. Sony A700 :ugh:. I have a Canon now and have messed with it extensively. I have also been taking some courses in Photography and have learned a great deal of things that I would of never learned on my own. I thought sub forums were for discussing and sharing information about that particular subject?
