How long until SLR's are obsolete? Or do you think the current generation of young camera users are already too stubborn to give it up? I noticed a lot of people that were against movie mode, simply because it was unorthodox.

why would slr's become obsolete? why is it news that video is possible? the same sensors used in d-slr's have been in digital video cameras for a while now....

What would young camera users have to give up?

Your questions don't really make any sense. Photography isn't going to disappear just because you can make movies. If that were the case it would have happened YEARS ago.

I think that every camera will prob. come out with video mode, though I dunno how much the average shooter is gonna use it. I know when I had video mode on my P+S I never really used it. I think the reason is that if a person is looking to start photography and they look at their options they're gonna be like "oh, this one has video" and prob. go with that one, therefore for everyone else to get a piece of the pie they're gonna have to adapt.

sorry, let me rephrase. what i mean is that chip technology is getting more efficient and producing less heat. this means that running a sensor all the time is becoming a realistic approach, instead of hiding it behind mirrors (you know, how an SLR works). you can use "live view" continuously on a point and shoot because the image sensor is tiny. pretty soon you will be able to run an "slr" sized sensor full time, eliminating the need for the SLR mechanism.

what i was asking is how long do you think before using a swinging mirror and shutter curtains to hide the sensor becomes obsolete? or will people be so attached to the idea that they would rather have it present?

There are other reasons (most of them being far more important than sensor temp) for having a mirror/pentaprism design. The odds of EVF displays overtaking traditional SLR designs on anything but the lowest end cameras is pretty remote.

Video capability has nothing to do with it at all.

I think the displays have to come a LONG fucking way before they can exceed the accuracy and reproduction capable of my eye looking through the actual lens.

Samsung might have a decent cam coming out that uses an EVF (albeit a ways off) http://www.amateurphotographer.co.u...tal_camera_system_on_the_way_news_266661.html

Not that I like it... I shoot with one of the best analog viewfinders ever devised for 35mm format on a camera design from 1954 :mamoru:

    then you missed this:
Considerably larger sensor than micro four thirds... large enough to do decent work or for a serious amateur.

..yea actually it does. you can't run the sensor for a long time if it overheats. why do you think live view only recently came out? and why do you think you can't use it next to hot studio lighting or outdoors for extended periods of time?

maybe i'm just ignorant then. what are the other far more important reasons for using the SLR design that would keep it from being obsolete?

i think you could do it now with extremely greater accuracy than your eye can distinguish through the view finder. keep in mind you can zoom in on an LCD, even if its resolution limited.

Dude! Brilliant! HD Live View!! I'm going to carry around a 40" Plasma TV with 1080p to use as a viewfinder now. That'll be sweet!

uh, or you could put an lcd in the view finder?

i think i got my answer by listening to all of you dance around and avoid the question. technology will have to slow down because people aren't ready for the changes.
