I have an Canon XTi and am still learning. Any advice or tips on how to use this bad boy? I love having this awesome piece of equipment, but don't know how to use it.

Read the manual. I'd Keep it in ETTL until you get a feel for the flash's power.

Is ETTL closest to an auto mode on the flash?

yeah, ETTL will adjust flash power automatically

but its best to learn using manual flash power for consistency

as far as i'm concerned all camera-mounted flashes, whether it be a 430 or 580exII, are for quickie shots.

    put that baby off-camera :)

i love using it for fill light in the day. although i still suck at it. nothing like getting a nicely exposed person in shadow with a bright colorful background that isn't blown on

Grab some Cactus Triggers (V2) and a cheap lighting stand rig, that should last you about a year

    XTi love :wavey:

They look goofy as all hell but a GaryFong thing works pretty well for a diffuser.
