High reps are better for toning and low reps are more bulking up. :hsugh:

So if I was to debate with the guy, what would I say? That a variety of rep ranges are actually best to stimulate muscle growth and that being "toned" has very little to do with actual hypertrophy or musculature? :dunno:

why argue with her trainer... it really isn't even worth your time. uneducated trainers like that are so set in their stupid ways and its like arguing with a small child.

That there is no such thing as toning. You are actually referring to muscle definition. This is created through increased hypertrophy (at this point he will get a confused look on his face) or fat loss. THere is such a thing as tonus, but it has nothing to do with the look of the muscle, and you won't know what the hell I am talking about even if I told you. High reps can have some effect on hypertrophy, but to reach your true potential it is necessary to include a variety of rep ranges in your workout. BTW, high rep ranges don't increase endurance any more than low rep ranges do either. So telling someone to do solely high reps is completely retarded. You should be ashamed to call yourself a PT.

Toning is not a real thing
being "toned" is often equated with being lean
and there for dieting to loose body fat could be considered toning, however higher reps is not going to make your body leaner.

...how do you guys feel about the different body types... like endo, ecto and mesomorph.... (or even a combo of two) do you guys think that they play a factor? Maybe what the trainer is trying to say is... that perhaps his mom is a "meso" and that with higher weights... she may "bulk"?

You are not in any position to give advice, you obviously have no idea what youre talking about. Please leave FN and never come back, or shut your mouth.

I think people have different bone structure (ie. one guy has wider shoulder than another), people have different metabolisms, and people have differing capability of putting on muscle (ie. more natural test, less myostatin, blah blah blah). But I don't think everyone conforms to one of three "body types"

I have talked to a few that do. Of course they are usually fitness or figure competitors.

But I think this is what is wrong with FN. Too many people who have no clue giving out advice. If he has a question, fine, but right now hes just giving out false information.
