I just found out from my best friend who i've been friends with since like 3 years old is being commissioned in the army on Tuesday :eek4:.

He just graduated from college and is going to Ohio State medical school (he starts next week actually). It would have cost him $250,000 by the time his first 4 years of med school were up, so he is joining the army and they're going to pay for all of it, then he has to serve ~4 years as a doctor in the army when he's all finished with med school.

I knew he was thinking about doing it for a while but I never thought he'd actually go through with it. Even though he's being commissioned on Tuesday, he'll be just like a regular civilian until he graduates from med school.

He was bragging to me about how he gets to carry an M9 and stuff and how he'll be a captain when he gets out :mamoru:. There's no fucking way i'm calling him sir and saluting him when I earn the title... well, mabye in a sarcastic way .

Getting a commission becuase the army is short on doctors. Don't really dig that. Offer to send more prior-service OCS guys to medschool...or just pay the diffrence for civilians. But I reckon just handing out the captain's bars is the cheapest in most cases.

Medical/Dental officers come in at the rank of Captain or Major depending on their skill level.

How do you "real" officers feel about kids coming in at the rank of Captain without really having to work for it or do anything, except go to school?

He told me it counts as IRR or something like that.

I was kinda surprised that he said he doesn't have to go to OCS or anything like that at all.

I was flying one time, and sat next to a Lt. Col. Took their commission at that rank, b/c of their experience in the Medical feild. Crazy shit.

In the AF at least, they go through a version of OCS. They're doctors, they're not really leading troops into battle and IMO their title is more honorary than anything, I dunno.

My bunkmate in Field Training was a guy who had done the same things in ROTC as I had, he just happened to be going to Med school after he finished is B.S.

Although I'm not 'real' yet, as long as they realize that they've only been in X amount of time, then I'm ok with it. Then again I'm not going to go in as a butterbars and throw my "rank" around on guys who have been in for 15 years and act like I know everything.

don't get one at all. Even if you're an officer. It seems like all officers in our unit has got a Jeep Wrangler.
