Do I return it to the store or to the company to have it calibrated?
I've never had this happen before and sadly was expecting it.

depends... have you every had a 1.4 prime before? Perhaps user error? i would go out and take some photos in day light, and then bring them back in to look at them. I always assume its my fault first before playign teh equipment, until i use it in real world situations

If there's one lens I wouldn't think this would happen to it's the 50..

Make sure before you send it back. 1.4 can be a bitch.

I tried it on my canon 1.4 same position, same point of focus, same camera and it focuses just fine but on the sigma, it's quite a bit off. It's like it's not evening focusing the same object.

This lens is frickin' awesome. It's actually rated a bit higher than it's canon / nikon counterparts..

The only thing is they occasionally front focus.. send it back, they will take it no questions asked, fix it, and send you back a tack sharp copy.

you know there's in camera calibration for lenses, right? ;)

at least on Nikons... I'm sure the newer Canons have it too.

i need to learn photography yes

but my 27 years on this planet has made me aware on how to spot an asshole

previous engagements with him have made up my mind.

not really. i was actually talking to my one coworker about this. he is new to dslr's

tamrons u hear all the time... 17-50 and 28-75 are nice lenses, but it's rolling the dice to find a sharp copy

tokina i have personally seen is frustrating as shit. i get my first 12-24. it comes new in the box with shit all over it and dust inside. i send back for a 2nd lens that comes all shit up. sharpness is meh

    now this sigma.

anyone heard of nikkor's coming shit up/out of whack new in box?

ooohh.. man, 27 years... on this planet... You must be some sort of zen master or something...

the only 'previous engagements' with me have been when you jumped to some idiotic, ridiculous stance on some issue that makes ABSOLUTELY no sense at all. Like this one, for instance. You come off as a douchenozzle know it all who, surprisingly, doesn't know what the fuck they are talking about. Just because I tell you so doesn't make me an asshole. Or maybe it does.. :dunno: either way, i'm fine with that.

siniquezu: if the store is local, take it back to them to see if you can swap it with another, and bring your camera to test out one or two before making the swap. If the store isn't local, or leetpilot works there and is a cocksmoker and won't let you return it because it's not a Nikon/Canon, call up Sigma and ask for a RMA number to send it in to be calibrated. Their customer service is spotty with their consumer crap lenses, but with stuff like this they're pretty spot on.

Side question: can you MF it and get the shot? Is it sharp when it's in focus? Just trying to figure out if the AF is broked, or if a lens is out of alignment...
